Writing an attack¶
Adding a new attack (or a whole new family) is intentionally small. Every attack subclasses Attack and implements two methods; the runner, scoring, and report renderer pick it up automatically.

Put the literal token <CANARY> wherever you want the unique canary substituted, and replace it in build_document().
A minimal single-document attack¶

The default scoring applies: a landing is the canary appearing in the response without refusal-context language. That's right for most instruction-following attacks.
Register it¶
Add the family to src/rag_poison_lab/attacks/__init__.py:

It now appears in list-attacks, runs under attack / compare, and is filterable with --family my_family.
Add a production-impact blurb¶
Reports render a "Production impact" paragraph per family. Add an entry to _PRODUCTION_IMPACT in src/rag_poison_lab/report.py keyed by your family name. A regression test (tests/test_report.py) fails if any shipped family is missing one, so this isn't optional.
Custom scoring¶
If a bare canary match would over-count, override landed(). For example, markdown_exfil requires the canary inside image syntax, and tool_call_hijack requires an actual CALL to the targeted tool:

The guiding principle: bias toward not counting refusals. A false-positive landing in a delivered report is worse than missing a borderline one.
Multi-document and tool attacks¶
- For an injection split across several documents, override
build_documents()to return a list. The runner ingests each as a separate corpus entry; the report renders each hop. Seeattacks/multi_hop.py. - To exercise an agentic tool surface, override
tools()to return a list oflab.ToolSpec, and score against theCALL name(args)convention. Seeattacks/tool_call_hijack.py.
Test it¶
Every family has a deterministic test file (no LLM calls). Follow the existing pattern: assert each payload carries its canary, canaries are unique, and any custom scoring lands on a real success and not on a refusal:
